I had the opportunity to engage with the murals in person during a study abroad trip in Ireland, Northern Ireland and Spain.

My bachelor’s thesis for my public history degree examined the murals of Northern Ireland and how they facilitated for discussion in regards to their contested history. There are spaces carved out in both republican and loyalist communities that are used by muralist as a space of commemoration, rebellion and dialogue. Several cities and towns across Northern Ireland are home to famous murals that comment on and memorialize the political conflict that peaked in the 1960's and 1970's. The murals in Northern Ireland have been used by artists, the communities, and tourist as political commentary, as well as a method to memorialize people and to preserve events that occurred during The Troubles. The murals are used by each of the opposing sides of the conflict to create a different historical memory. These histories are often times competing with one another, and this is done in a very public manner due to works of art such as the murals.
